Frequently Asked Questions
Q. Are you a Fashion Buyer by profession?
A. No. While I enjoy shopping, the thought of doing it as a JOB
is not appealing to me.
Q. What’s your favorite store for fashion?
A. I can honestly say I don't have a "favorite" store.
I don't discriminate-- I am an equal opportunity buyer, and will visit any
store in any town because I never know what deals are waiting for me. I've
scored some great buys at stores ranging from Fallas to Neiman Marcus.
Q. Who’s your favorite designer?
A. I don’t have a favorite designer and I don’t discriminate if
the quality is good and the price is really really really good. I do like
certain brands that appeal to my style and size, but I don’t make buying
decisions based on a designer or brand and avoid all clothes and accessories
that have designer names and logos prominently displayed on the item. Wait!
When I ran track in college, I was sponsored by Nike and received more athletic
clothes, shoes, and bags than I could ever wear. Disclaimer: I reserve the
right to change my mind for an endorsement contract.
Q. Do you shop online or brick & mortar?
A. Both, but online shopping is not my primary source for
clothes. I know there are some good sites that are member based and have
designer “events,” but I hesitate to shop online often because, 1) time and
money flies when you have the convenience of shopping 24/7, while brick &
mortar stores eventually close and forces you stop, 2) I’m touchy feely when it
comes to clothes, and I don’t like surprises (the bad one), and 3) shipping,
return shipping, and restocking fees can cause you to overpay for items.
Q. What do you do for a living?
A. I’ve been in Human Resources for over 25 years and currently
work as a Human Resources Manager. Enough said.
Q. Do you ever sell any of your clothes?
A. Glad you asked. I recently launched an online store, Preowned Fashions because I only buy
what I can comfortably fit in My Closet (never want to be a
candidate for Hoarders) and I have accumulated a serious overflow of clothes
with tags or worn once or twice (even after donating to my favorite charities).
So I had to come up with a(n) excuse
business reason to aggressively shop for deals. And, since I always find really
great deals that are not in my size or style, I also have another business
reason to shop.
Q. How do you organize your closet?
A. I’m a seasonal dresser (I grew up in Chicago), so my closet
is organized by season, then by category, then by color. If it’s winter, I want
to see all of my winter sweaters organized together by color, and all of my
winter skirts organized together by color, etc. However, living in Texas with
these unpredictable seasons (using the A/C one day and heater the next) is
messing up my flow.
Q. What advice would you give someone who strives to be A Savvy
Shopper?
A. First, organize and
inventory your closet. You gotta know what you have (and need). Second, open a bank account with a debit card (NO CREDIT CARDS) just
for shopping. You should have limits on how much you can afford to spend. If
you’re married, that may not be your decision alone. Third, reverse your buying habits. Buy your winter clothes (coats,
jackets) in the spring and buy your summer clothes (swim suits, shorts, tank
tops) in the fall. Fourth, never ever pay MSRP!
Ever!
Q. What’s your best buy ever?
A. That’s a hard question to answer so I created a page
highlighting my very best deals. Click to view: My Savvy Buys.
Q. What is your philosophy for shopping?
A. I define My Closet as my own Boutique and I'm the Fashion Buyer.
My goal is to buy items that will
hopefully augment my presence and style without going into debt. A professional Fashion Buyer's goal is similar
but much more complicated because s/he has to figure out what the masses want
or will buy at a price that is profitable for the store.
Q. What is the best way to contact you?
